SPP Event: Member Option Exercises for DB Schemes
Online
Tuesday 28 January 2025
09:00-10:15am
Now that markets have settled down following the gilts crisis and heightened inflation, some sponsoring employers and trustees are starting to think about member option exercises again.
This session will look at these in more detail, including the types of option to be considered, the potential benefits, communication requirements, and legal issues.
Speakers
Mike Whittingham, Principal and Senior Consulting Actuary, Barnett Waddingham
Mike is a Scheme Actuary with over eleven years’ experience in the pensions industry, working with DB schemes ranging from sub-£10m to over £1bn. He has significant experience advising clients on funding, journey planning, risk transfer options and more recently run-on strategy, and is a member of Barnett Waddingham’s specialist member options team, supporting a range of clients (and consultants) in member options strategy and design.
Sonya Fraser, Partner, Arc Pensions Law
Sonya is a Partner at Arc Pensions Law. She has 14 years’ experience supporting trustees and employers operating DB and DC workplace pension schemes. Sonya advises on day-to-day pensions issues, such as compliance with new legal developments, pensions tax, governance requirements, trustee duties and discretions. She has a large amount of experience advising on end-game planning and risk transfer projects (including use of scheme surplus for DC benefit provision), member options, employer-driven benefit changes, GMP equalisation/conversion and bulk transfers/scheme mergers.
Steve Powell, Partner, Head of Client Communications, XPS Group
Steve leads the XPS communications team that is responsible for improving the way schemes engage with their members. He combines technical pensions knowledge with an understanding of the benefits of simple, creative, and engaging content.
James Forrest, Principal and Senior Consulting Actuary, Gallagher Benefit Services (Chair)
James has almost 35 years’ experience in the pension industry, working for the Co-op insurance Society (CIS), KPMG and Buck (now Gallagher). He is an actuary and senior consultant working on some of Gallagher’s biggest Schemes, including a number of Scheme Actuary appointments and Corporate clients. He has led Gallagher’s 150 person-strong Manchester Team, and is now more heavily involved in Gallagher’s growth strategy and, most pertinently for this session, leading the team that provides advice to corporate sponsors of UK Defined Benefit schemes.
